Today's faster, high-tech fiberglass Alaskan was introduced in 1997 by Oviatt Marine as the "Grand Alaskan", a 60 foot raised pilothouse design, inspired by Arthur DeFever and vaguely reminiscent of the original full displacement wooden Alaskans also designed by DeFever for American Marine (1964-1973). In order to avoid market confusion, in 2002 Oviatt Marine dropped the term "Grand" and American Marine (Grand Banks) relinquished use of the term "Alaskan" to Oviatt forever. The designer, Arthur DeFever, is the only common denominator between the two companies. The new Alaskan's are traditionally styled yachts built in Taiwan factories in various lengths and styles from 53 to 80 feet in length with new designs up to 100 feet planned. All Alaskan hull forms are semi-displacement and capable of planing speeds with larger engines. Note that Oviatt Marine is the exclusive dealer for Alaskan yachts.
